Mise-en-scène

By definition mise-en-scène means to "place on stage." It incorporates everything the camera captures and the viewer experiences, including sound and overall tone.

Some of the things we want to consider as we storyboard and film are diegetic and nondiegetic elements.  Diegetic elements include anything in the world of the film, such as an event, character, object, setting, or sound. Nondiegetic elements include anything outside of the story's world, such as the background music, credits, or narration.  Below is a video demonstrating the impact nondiegetic sound can have on the overall tone (and part of the mise-en-scène) of a scene.
